February is LGBT History Month – a chance to learn about and celebrate the life and work of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people.

This year, SNS will host an LGBT Spring Concert for the whole of Hackney in the school theatre on Thursday 17 February.

Hackney Mayor Jules Pipe and the London Gay Men’s Chorus will share the stage with the school’s own bands and ensembles – and the event will showcase the work going on in classrooms during LGBT History Month.

Lessons

February will see students using newspaper articles about homophobia to improve their debating and writing skills in English lessons. In music, they will perform classics by top LGBT artists.

Actor Lasana Shabazz will be in school to lead the ‘I am’ drama project, helping students devise their own play on the theme of identity.

Art students will learn about the work of Grayson Perry, Frida Kahlo and Keith Haring . Design and technology students will make LGBT themed keyrings, for sale to raise money for the Terrence Higgins Trust, and the language department will show the film Ma Vie en Rose.

Year 8 will stage a Pride march on a creative day, when they will learn about carnival and Mardi Gras traditions.

Concert

All parents and students are welcome to attend the concert, from 6pm to 8pm on Thursday 17 February, with tickets priced at £3 and £2. The event will be an evening of music, song, drama, presentations and speeches.
